Principal’s Message:
By Mr Kort Goodman - Principal
Dear Students, Parents and Caregivers
Welcome back to Term Two. As members of the Assumption College Community and the Church we have now moved beyond the Feast of Easter and I hope that as a family you were able to gather in Church to celebrate the Easter event. Following on from Easter we are faced with readings, which provide insights into the various encounters that the apostles had with Jesus as He re-entered their lives after his death and resurrection. These readings encourage us to take the time to reflect upon the significance of Christ in our own lives. Where do we see, meet and find Christ in our lives and how do we mirror Christ’s teaching in our lives.
At Assumption College we have been endeavouring to address these questions as part of our Strategic Plan for 2018 - 2022. We have clearly stated in our strategic intents that we are striving to be an authentic, Catholic community in the Mercy and Edmund Rice traditions, where students, staff and families are valued members of the community. Under each of these intents we have a number of strategies listed which we have begun to action which will enable us to continue to strive to be more Christ like in our everyday lives.
This week we pray that we can live a full life being a positive example of Christ’s life shining within us.
Lord,
Let me be an example to all that I encounter.
By my life, let me be an inspiration.
Not proud and puffed up but gentle and sensitive, a light to all.
And let that light shine from within me,
so that it is recognised without words,
the very essence of your love and promise to us so that those who cross my path on life’s highways
will feel your presence living in me and want this too to be written on their own hearts.
Amen
Student Reports & Parent Teacher Interviews
At Assumption College we value and emphasise the need for parents, students and teachers to develop a working partnership so that we can assist each other to attain the best educational outcomes for our students. We enthusiastically encourage parents to contact their children’s teachers at any time.
The beginning of Term 2 brings with it the opportunity for parents and caregivers to formally meet with their student’s teachers during our two scheduled parent – teacher interview sessions. These sessions will occur next Monday 29th April and Tuesday 7th May and we encourage all parents / caregivers to make the most of this opportunity.
One of the most important things that should occur during these interviews is an open and honest conversation about the student’s progress and how we can work together. Students all too often see advice as criticism and as a result they don’t act on it and their progress is adversely affected. However, when parents support and reinforce the teacher’s advice, students are more likely to act. Like parents, teachers get the greatest reward when they see their students happy and achieving to their potential.
Staffing
At the end of Term 1 Miss Tegan Woodbridge left Assumption College and moved back to Brisbane to take up a position at Ambrose Treacy College. We hope that all goes well for Miss Woodbridge and we thank her for her efforts during her time at Assumption College. As a result of Miss Woodbridge’s departure, we have welcomed Mr Roger Bartholomeusz to Assumption College. Mr Bartholomeusz comes to us from Perth and we look forward to working with him.
Student Protection Contacts
A reminder for all parents and students that Assumption College has five nominated Student Protection Contacts who are staff members who students can raise concerns of abuse, harm or inappropriate behaviour with. At Assumption College our student protection contacts are;
Mr Craig Frattini
Ms Suzy Krause
Mrs Julie Collins
Mrs Jennifer Gillespie
Mr Kort Goodman
All staff receive regular training on student protection in order to be able to respond appropriately to any student protection concerns. Further information regarding student protection policy and procedures can be accessed at;

APRE News:
By Mrs Carol Sharp, APRE
Easter Liturgy
At the end of last term our senior students led us in our Easter liturgy. This year, we focussed on the stations of the cross and how the arrest, trial and execution of Jesus Christ challenges us to help others to carry their cross. Students reflected on Pope Francis’s call to recognise the suffering of others and how to respond to this suffering with compassion.

Project Compassion
A big thank you to all those who donated to Project Compassion. We raised an amazing total of $1,600 for Caritas. This is especially impressive when we consider that we raised more than last year, even though we had 2 less weeks of Lent during the school term this year. This money will make a huge difference to the lives of those living in extreme poverty providing them with access to resources and skills that will help them to help themselves. Well done to the whole ACW community!

Mother’s Day Mass
All Mothers, Grandparents and caregivers are invited to attend our Mother’s Day Mass at 1pm on Friday, May 10. Mass will be held at St. Mary’s Church with afternoon tea to follow at St. Mary’s Hall. It would be wonderful to be able to show our Mothers just how much we appreciate them.
Prayer for Mothers
We thank you, O Lord, for the gift of Motherhood.
May those blessed with children be granted the gifts of courage, perseverance and good health.
May they face each new day with faith and hope in your abiding love.
May all families find in the strength of your love
The priceless gift of peace
And so bear witness to your glory.
Amen
Curriculum News:
By Mrs Anna Hardy, Assistant Principal—Curriculum
Report cards and Parent-teacher interviews: At the end of last term, progress reports were posted home to give parents/guardians an indication of how their child is progressing in their studies. To follow on from these reports, the first parent-teacher interviews night was held on Monday 29th April and the second evening will occur on Tuesday 7th May from 3:30pm – 6:00pm. We understand that families have busy schedules; however we would really appreciate an opportunity to discuss your child’s education with you. All teachers will be available for interviews, so if you wish to speak to another teacher e.g Learning Support, Deputy Principal, Principal or myself about a matter or issue, feel free to schedule a time on either afternoon.
Assessment calendars: will be available on your child’s I-pad/laptop this week. Please look for the assessment calendar icon to view their upcoming assessment.
NAPLAN: NAPLAN will occur from the 14th-17th May for all Year 7 and 9 students. The 17th May will be a catch-up day for any students who miss the testing. The tests will be held during normal lesson times on these days and students will return to regular classes after the testing. If you have queries around this testing, please contact us via the College office. All Year 7 and 9 students will be required to sit the test unless the parents complete appropriate paperwork. The withdrawal form is available from the College office and we encourage you to discuss this decision with us.
Tutorials: Tutorials have begun on Thursday afternoons from 3:15-4:15pm.
Senior Schooling: The second Senior Schooling Parenting Information Session will be held on the 7th May at 6pm after the parent/teacher interviews. It will outline further details about ATAR and Vocational Education options. We invite all parents and guardians of Year 10 students to attend. Other parents are most welcome as well.
Year 11 Subject Changes: As Term 2 rapidly moves into full swing it is timely to remind Grade 11 students and caregivers that changes to currently enrolled subjects are not able to be approved after week 3 of this term (Friday 3rd May). The constraints of the new QCE system require mastery of foundational content within all year 11 courses and this is supported by the development of student/teacher relationships, completion of the full suite of assessment instruments and minimised disruptions to the learning program. Therefore, it is not advisable that changes to subjects be made after this point. If you or your student have questions or concerns about their current courses of study, please do not hesitate to contact Ms Eliza Harris or Mrs Anna Hardy at your earliest convenience so that changes are able to be finalised prior to this deadline.
